Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. While she was a small girl, she struggled with an obsessional disorder. She also experienced anxiety because of the word"association. Ford began to be fascinated by acting as a teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she was not a fit. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning a place on her fourth attempt. A classmate of hers included Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however in the meantime she was already making her TV debut on the 1991 season in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Tate was on television in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Her regular work in theatre brought her into the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedy, that were added to her show in the year 1996.
